Dawn, I also started to do the MDS in 1989 on paper. I thought at that time what a lot of work. The booklet the DON gave me was about 1/2 of an inch thick. I actually took it on vacation to read. When I got back I told her that it was too involved and that she should choose someone else to do this "thing". Then 11 years later the same DON recruited me to be the MDS nurse, boy what a change! Now I wouldn't do anything else. And my what a difference in the width of the instruction "booklet" :0)

I started completing an assessment and a care plan in 1989 at a facility here in Florida. Of course it was all done by hand and the least concern of the survey teams. However, I would imagine in 1987 when OBRA came into play? Any help out there?

Exactly when did the MDS start?
