Not in the bed at midnight, Midnight Rule kicks in. You cannot bill for the day, and the PPS calendar continues based on the original day of admission, but you adjust it back a day. (Example, resident admitted on May 1. The 5 day assessment is done, and res goes out to hospital for observation on May 9. Returns May 10. You do not bill for May 9, and that day does not count on the PPS calendar. Thus, May 10 is now day 9 for assessment purposes, and the assessment window for your 14 day assessment will be May 12-15 rather than May 11-14. All the other assessment windows are reset accordingly.)
