Hi Dan,
This is a known side effect of Gleevec and it is discussed 
periodically. OHSU refers to this as "fragile skin" and I believe
that it is from the Gleevec effect on C-kit, just like the 
de-pigmentation, where some people get lighter. 

There isn't really a remedy for this. I have been on IM for 5 years,
high dose for 3.5 years and my "fragile skin" seems to cycle for me 
like other side effects. Sometimes just bumping something tears the 
skin right off. So, carry lots of cute bandaids....with the smiley 
faces!!
