Hi, yes it is possible for Hydrea to work that quickly, however the
treatment is just beginning. Your father's doctor will probably put him
on Gleevec at 400mg or 800mg in the next week or two. Hydrea is good
for bringing down the white cell counts rapidly and the Gleevec will
work on eliminating the leukemia cells and suppressing their
production. You can expect it to take eighteen to thirty six months to
achieve remission, but expect to continue on Gleevec indefinitely. If
he proves to be resistant to Gleevec their are some alternatives which
should soon be approved. If your father's doctor does not start him on
Gleevec soon ask why and be prepared to look for a CML specialist. I have some basic knowledge about CML (and and finding more as days go on). While in the hospital, the doctor started him on Hydrea, which he took for about a week. At his followup visit after the week, the doctor said his blood count was back to normal, and took him off the hydrea (until his next visit, about a week from now). Is it possible that the Hydrea worked that quickly ? Is it normal for the treatment to be so short ? I am totally confused now. I'm getting the "reports" through my mom, who, unfortunately, doesn't always understand what's going on. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated !------------------------ Yahoo!
