Glad you were able to find this group. Hydroxyurea is given to bring the counts back down and then the next course of action is for the doctor to start Gleevec, the only drug on the market taken by mouth the rest of his life or until something else comes along. Doctors differ in what dose to start the Gleevec on but the theory is that the larger the dose, the faster and deeper the remission. And, that is the goal: remission to keep the disease in check.
I would suggest that someone go to the MD appointments with your dad who will be willing to take notes. It is impossible to remember everything that is said and having the written notes keeps all of you on the same page because different people hear different things.
Hopefully, your father will be seen by a CML specialist -- there aren't many.
