April 19th was the 12th anniversary of the day I entered the STI 571 trial at
UCLA, and over the 12 years I've been on treatment with Gleevec, I've had
scores of eye bleeds. Sometimes they come in clusters where I'll have several
right in a row, and sometimes I go for many months without one. Dr. Charles
Sawyers, my doctor and the co-investigator in the STI 571 study at UCLA, Dr.
Ron Paquette, my current doctor who was involved with the studies for Sprycel,
and my opthalmologist all have said these eye bleeds are benign. Sawyers and
Paquette are considered CML experts. These eye bleeds look horrible, but they go
away in a few days. Some of mine are small in the corner of my eye, and some
have covered the entire white of my eye in deep crimson. (I get a lot of
sympathy for those!) Sometimes I can tell I'm getting one because I feel a
little pin prick in my eye, and sometimes I can't feel a thing.

None of these doctors have said anything about them being dangerous or leading
to brain bleeds. This is just the information that I have.

Subject: [CMLHope] Eye Bleeds

I've been on Gleevec since March '09, should let Zavie know that I can be his
newest member of the zero club. But tonight I got an eye bleed. Doesn't hurt
but looks awful. Anyone have any info on what to expect?

Thanks, dear friends. Even my wonderful doctor says every now and then "go
check with your group".
