Hi Victoria: Yes, I've had tremendous hair thinning. My doctor did not think it was Gleevec and for quite a bit, I believed that was correct. My mother is one of seven girls and all of her sisters have hair that thinned as they aged. But I also noticed the eyebrows, too. Hair loss is a side effect of Gleevec that some people experience. I checked with my insurance carrier and if I wanted to get a wig, they would reimburse me $300. I've cut my hair very short, got a cute inexpensive wig for bad hair days and moved on. Just happy to be here and glad that it isn't worse.
Has anyone had surgery while on Gleevec? One of the other things inherited from my mother's side of the family is drooping eyelids. My eye doctor gave me a field vision, test which I failed, and sent me to a plastic surgeon with a recommendation for an eyelid lift. The surgeon is someone I have known for 35 years, Chief at Johns Hopkins, and since I am in remission and bloodwork has been good, I am scheduled for this procedure on 8/23. I have my 3 month FISH and BCR-ABL on Friday and the outcome of that will determine whether or not surgery takes place. Just wondering is it worth the risk when I have this underlying illness. The doctors seem to feel that it will be perfectly fine. I would love to hear some feedback and hope that you, Victoria, find some comfort in knowing that you are not alone in going through this issue.
