WebDAV is a standards based approach to a CMS interface. Let me give you an
example, Dreamweaver can do WebDAV (to some degree, the last I used it
didn't do SSL or Digest mode authentication, only plain text password
authentication). We plugged Dreamweaver in to Apache's WebDAV module and
Merant's Collage CMS product. Collage did all the versioning and CMS kind
of things that you except from a CMS product, Apache just gave you access to
files and replaced the file if you updated it. The Web Designers just
worked with Dreamweaver and didn't know that difference between the two.
