Some time ago i asked on this list how to write double-floats to disk,
and ended up with routines that where able to save fairly arbitrary
datastructures to disk (in binary) using internal compiler functions
(it was an answer by Pierre Mai). If you are interested, and nobody
objects, I could send them to you and/or post them here again...

they are _extremely_ fast.
