Joe, Speaking as a representative for a Canadian based rope manufacturer, the current business climate for any Canadian export to the US is problematic to say the least. It is especially challenging when you’re dealing with any form of textile products, which, by the USMCA are subject to the “yarn carried forward” provision of the treaty, means that any textile product made from yarn that is made outside of the US Canada or Mexico, is subject to a 35% tariff. Good luck finding a polyester or nylon fiber manufacturer in any of those countries. Even a “made in USA” fabric like Sunbrella is made from yarns sourced outside of North America.
Even if you were to bring Genco the old dodger, have them make a new one, and you went up to Toronto to pick it up, you would need to secure a customs broker and pay the tariff at the border before you’d be allowed entry back into the states with the new item.. Genco would need to provide a commercial invoice stating the cost of the dodger along with the HTS (harmonized tariff code) and a USMCA document. You’d need to declare the purchase when you travelled back the states. Failure to disclose the purchase and if it turned up in your vehicle would be significantly no bueno. Perhaps if you told Genco you would be handling any tariffs and duties by being listed as the “importer of record” on the transaction, they may agree to do business with you. But, given that there would be a 35% tariff on the cost of the dodger, is the price from Genco low enough to absorb the added cost? It is getting near end-of-life and a few years ago they quoted me a reasonable price to make a new one. I called them recently and they said they no longer will deal with American customers :( Does anyone know if they flat out don’t like us (for reasons……..) or just don’t want to hassle with shipping and tariffs? It would be a long day in the car, but I don’t mind just driving to Toronto to drop the old one off and get the new one. Joe Della Barba Coquina C&C 35 MK I
