Don’t fall in – plan number 1! Our area is somewhat uniquely dangerous. The Chesapeake is shallow enough to lose a lot of heat by mid-January, we can easily have low 30s water and sometimes ice. We also can have nice warm (for winter) sunny days, so you can be sailing in a light jacket or even just a shirt in the middle of winter and forget how badly you will be hosed if you go in. In colder places boats are just put away for the winter and warmer places are warmer.
