Hi, just a wild guess: If you create (actually re-create, because I think that in a standard Cocoon installation, there is already one) a file messages.xml in the same directory and with the same content as messages_en.xml, would that work? Maybe you'll give it a try.
I'm not sure at all, but from the behaviour I observed, the file messages.xml should contain the messages in the default language.
