Eh... I used the Mac version of BladeEnc and compared it to the
Windows version of Lame... ;) Just to make the comparison as
unobjective as possible... ;)
But, talking about Mac MP3 encoders, if you have SoundEdit or Peak,
you can get a freeware Fraunhofer-quality (I think...) MP3 encoder
plugin for it. It's called "Macromedia Shockwave Audio Export Xtra"
and you can download it here:
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/updates/SE16SWA.hqx
Even if you _don't_ have Peak or SoundEdit (or any other Premiere
plugin compatible audio editor), you can use the Xtra with this
little frontend helper application:
http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~d2linjo/mp3/
Put the Xtra and "MP3 Encoder" in the same folder....
I don't know for sure, but I think that Macromedia's encoder is
licenced from Fraunhofer. At least it makes very high quality MP3's
(when you have selected the "high quality" option...). This encoder
isn't as fast as some others on Mac-side, but its quality is superior.
The best part is that using the Macromedia MP3 Encoder isn't illegal:
Macromedia is a so big company that they definitely _have_ paid
Fraunhofer for their MP3 encoder licence... ;)
