from that commit:
bq. you can kill both ColumnSlice.validate() overloads (only used by
QP.validateSLiceFilter) altogether if you ditch
QueryProcessor.validateSliceFilter() (unused).
We used to not allow overlapping ranges but, 5573 removed that restriction.
Ed's tests exposed that it wasn't properly handled.
