How do you know "when you need to"?  You  only need to check this when there 
are more than one slice is passed in.  This de-overlapping only happens if > 1 
slice is passed in.  If you have something clever in mind then feel free to 
code it up.  In the end I thing the amount of cpu time will be the same.
