Thanks [~cgregori] for checking.
I'm not sure myself anymore but it's something that has been bugging me for a 
while.
I remember [[email protected]] brought it up in the last year or so in some 
other JIRA but can't find it now.
It's kind of worrisome that the answer still mentions that we should handle 
negative values as 0s.
In any case, as you said we should have this problem in many more places.
