2. if it was a take-off of the original molds - kipped somehow, which seems
unlikely-but-is-at-least-plausible (and what I think pickle was
suggesting) - then even if it wasn't an "engineering sample", it would still
be arguably "genuine", being as close as you could get to "real Apple".

I think that these parts were made in Apple molds.
And if you make one you make a dozen. They would have been all over the
engineering area, I think.
Also If you were thinking about something like the imac, Why not try a few
colors on an old color classic?
