Yo compacters everywhere, My sense of safety is being alarmed by this thread. The original question was how necessary is the HD sled. Early on, the responses said not needed for operation; rather, it was needed for safety. The safety issue is that of an exposed electrical component rattling around loose wholly as unintended by the designers, builders, and sellers of your Mac. A loose exposed electrical component housed in a conductive metal environment at electrical ground potential represents a fire hazard. It is not a DIRECT life hazard. It is an INDIRECT life hazard via the fire such carelessness all to often results in. Examine your fire or home owners insurance contract. If you rent, examine your rental contract. In each case, you will see that you are obligated to observe all relevant safety codes and to operate only "listed" equipment in a manner prescribed by the builder. Violate these contracts at your own peril. You are responsible for all loss outside the contract. Outside of the contract,! insurance has no obligation to pay off. If it pays off, you will be repaying your insurer for a long long time. In some cases, you may be trying to repay from your very meager earnings in jail. Operating a piece of opened electrical equipment is already outside the contract. A loose piece inside being operated NOT intended by the builder is two steps outside the contract. The consequences of all of this is not an accident. In fact, you had control over every step, did it anyway, then the ashes surround you. Yes, we do work inside our Macs. But, please do not add to the danger by doing things in a manner you do not have to do just because you are to cheap or in a hurry to do it now. If you proceed anyway, please, outside your entry door, hang a big sign made from a bedsheet and your blood announcing to the world that you are doing something dumb, dangerous, and illegal inside. For those listers thinking "but I'm just a kid, that won't happen to me", your parents, their futur! e, thus likely your future, are obligated to the results of your errors. Now, just like a condom, use a sled. It's your ounce or gram of protection from your own self inflicted error.
