i'd tend to go with the newer substitution, the newer fast recovery
diodes are probably more reliable, and probably faster which makes
things easier on other parts of the power supply (it's a matter of how
fast the diode goes from conducting under forward bias to blocking when
the polarity reverses, all diodes take some time to turn on and off,
while they are reverse biased and still conducting they put a terrible
strain on things and waste power). it shouldn't add enough efficiency
to the power supply to hurt anything. i found specs of 5 amp at 400v,
though gamba's site says the original was a 3A (with the 5a being a
recommended upgrade), that is a major diode. they can also be had from
< http://www.derf.com> and several other places according to a google
search for "mr824 diode", if you don't specify "diode" you get allot of
genetics links. the diodes probably pass less current, but are probably
overrated because of not being fast enough (that's a guess). i'd
suggest any newer fast or ultra fast recovery diode in that current and
voltage range. going to a diode with a slightly higher current rating
is likely to improve reliability as well, that's usually how people
increase reliability in electronics, by overspecing parts, nothing last
long at it's "maximum" rating.
