they often do work for awhile, but of course they put a terrible strain on the rest of the circuitry, the heat comes from a higher ripple current, because the capacitor acts like a smaller and smaller cap and hence doesn't hold as much charge and needs more than normal on every charge cycle of the switching supply. it is of course normal for some of the top/end to show, but there should be some band around the edges. usually it's pretty consistent for a given brand/color of cap so others in the same unit are a good gauge for any given brand. i too have seen some that were terribly, terribly obvious, but hadn't destroyed anything else yet.
