Why not just hook up the ammeter in series with the 5V line, measure 
the current and then do the same with the 12V line?  The primary 
problem I see is that the 12V current is likely to vary a lot 
depending on the activity of the drive--I guess.   Or do the head 
positioning mechanisms run off the 5V supply?  At any rate, an idle 
drive will draw less current than a drive under heavy usage.  The 
manufacturer's specs would probably be best if you can get it.
