And it's another baby... won't know if it's a boy or a girl until I get it
started (though most of my babies turn out to be girls, so far I have a
Tanaquil, a Cleopatra and a Xenobia among others).

I just got a 512Ke off ebay. The seller advertised it as working and showed
a pic with the computer showing a healthy desktop. But, now that I've got
it out of the box and set up, it won't start. For the sake of intellectual
stimulation, I thought I'd try my hand at a bit of troubleshooting before I
start hassling the seller.

The computer receives power (I can hear the faint surging sound of the power
coming on, and another sound when I turn it off, though nothing else -- I
believe these early macs had no internal fan) but does not beep or light up
or show the blinking icon (though sometimes I see a very slight flash of
light on screen when I first turn the power swtich on). Instead of the beep
and the sound of the computer powering up, it makes a very soft putt-putt
noise and goes silent; the screen is dark.

I have fiddled with the brightness dial, that's definitely not the issue. I
have also tried detaching pretty much all the cables (except power of
course), still no luck. I tested both with and without the external hard
drive. I also tried switching to a different power cable and testing the
outlet, both of these tests check out.

I have read somewhere that some old compacts cannot start up if the battery
is dead -- am I showing the symptoms of a dead battery? I can't get to the
store to get a new one until tomorrow so thought I would check here!

Thanks in advance to the more experienced troubleshooters out there!

Sara
