When I opened my snail mail box today I found a pleasant surprise: a
US airmail envelope with some floptical diskettes, the 21 Mb 3.5 inch
diskettes that can be read by my iomega floptical.

The floptical is not as fast as one would expect from a optical disk
drive attached the scsi port. Actually it is about as fast as a
normal floppy drive. Contrary to the normal high density disks it can
also read, the 21 mb floptical disks can be used as startup disks. I
setup one of them as a startup disk and I like it. It may not be
fast, but because I installed system 6, which is quite suitable for
operating in floppy speed conditions, everything is just fine. The
one big advantage over using a floptical as a startup disk for a Mac
Plus over a zip or an external hard disk is the silence. A zip will
keep on spinning for 15 minutes after every disk access which
produces an irritating extra noise. Of course one can keep this
spinning under control by installing sleeper, but it is not optimal.
External hard disks with their loud fans are a burden for the ear.
The fanless floptical drive only spins when in used and shuts up as
soon as you are finished using the disk, just like a normal floppy
drive.
