Instead of cutting out a space in the blank faceplate you could always
stelth the cd-rom. Place the cdrom a bit father back in the mounts then it
is, and use double sided tape to affix the face plate to the tray area of
the cd-rom. Use some foam (insulation foam for doors, windows, etc works
great) or a bit of plastic over the eject button. This way, you just push
slightly on the corner of the drive faceplate by the eject button to
eject it. 
Or, if you have a dremel a jig saw it's pretty easy to cut an opening in
it - then use a small file/rasp to smooth things down. 

Just a couple ideas.
