No leaky capacitors; I also swabbed the motherboard with cotton swabs doused
in isopropyl alcohol while I was at it. No luck! I didn't have a PC speaker
to try out, but I'm guessing the problem is with the speaker. I understand
this machine was stored outdoors for a while, so it may have gotten wet at
some point. Aside from the usual dust, the interior was quite clean, but
aren't the speaker cones just paper? Even getting a little wet would be bad
for their health, if so.

Found it! Thanks. That really should have occurred to me!
