I have very painful memories of trying to use GBIP (aka IEEE488) cards in Macs to interface with Canon CLC300 (and other model) printers. I suspect that this is the most likely source for such a card in the UK (guessing from your pipex address). As a printer interface and as an interface to data collection devices, the card works well -- with a bit of effort. A lot less effort than a PC of equivalent age, I can assure you.


GPIB/IEEE488 still turns up at work occasionally in aged laboratory kit at the university at which I am employed. Unfortunately, my colleagues always turn to the aged (but over qualified) geek of similar maturity to attend to any problems...
