in. I thought it would have ruined the diskette when I went through
what I did to get it out! So the floppy drive is definetly not working
or at least correctly. I read that a lot of those got gummed-up
as you mentioned.

Many years ago (like almost 10) I bought a lot (11 large boxes) of Apple Service parts at an auction. Included were two brand new (well, never used) 400K floppy mechanisms.


I shipped one of them off without ever opening it. The other one I did inspect for some reason. The mechanism was frozen solid because the lubricant had hardened. This thing was new, never used and completely gummed up.

So yes, they get gummed up. Even if they've never been exposed to dust.

It didn't take very long to clean the thing up with alcohol and such and relub it with some light machine oil. But I would read the available archives, because they probably have more exact advice.
