Careful visual inspection of a gummed up, used 400KB drive is important. The gum makes the drive very stiff, increasing the load on nylon/plastic parts in the disk eject mechanism. Even on a well maintained drive, the plastic disk eject cam wears very badly and in such a way that disks may not eject fully.

It's best not to lube with a mineral based oil (eg WD-40) which may degrade the plastic components that would be (almost) impossible to replace. Silicone based lubricants are easy to find nowadays and don't turn to glue as they age.
