The left block has 8 switches and the right has 6 switches. These are "dual inline package" switch blocks and are used to set various options for the printer, such as character set, page length, perforation skip, characters per inch, Baud rate, communications protocol and whether or not an option card is installed.
According to the Owner's Manual the default settings are: SW1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 SW2 1 1 0 0 I have never connected my Imagewriter to anything other than my old Apple ][gs, so all else would be a guess. Also I has been some time since I booted anything earlier than Sys 6.08. You should have a Chooser that lets you select the printer. I assume you have a proper printer cable (DB9 to MiniDIN 8). According to the book, the Chooser should display an Icon that looks like an outline drawing of the Imagewriter II. Also, when using single sheets of paper, set the paper release lever (right rear) to the down position. Slip the sheet of paper between the back cover and the platen. find the single-sheet icon located near the left side of the back cover and place the paper so that it aligns with the line of the icon. Make sure that the paper is straight (just as you do when putting paper in a typewiter [sic - as wrtten] and in deep enough for the platen to grip the paper. Press the FORM FEED button to load the page automatically. To see if the printer is working, you can test it without connecting it to a computer. Roll in a sheet of paper. Turn off the printer. Press the Form Feed button and hold it down while you press the On/Off button. Release both buttons when the print head moves. To stop the self test, press the On/Off button to turn the printer off. At least this should tell you if the printer is working! Ken -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
