Peer over the top and watch it trying to print a half-page.
If the carriage isn't travelling all the way across and back,
the position sensor could be bunged up. Is there anything gumming up the
works inside? Like bits of paper?

Are the switches inside the rear cover set accordingly?

Since you're hand feeding, is the paper between the guide marks?
IS it set to tractor-feed instead of single sheet? A mechanical setting
on the top right(?) side, a lever.

Sounds annoying, but that's what I'd do to check it before chucking it.
