Others have answered your question about MP3, and I don't have anything I can add to that. But I can answer this for you!
As a general rule of thumb, maybe, as I'm not into sound much, players for compressed media like mp3's require quicktime 2.1 which in turn requires a 020 I think so I'm likely wrong.
One player for the 68k mac is mpg123mac68k which will play mp3's but requires a 040? which can be found in the link below.
Another point of interest is QT2.1 is available for 80386 and up with win3.1 or win95, though I doubt its required to play mp3's on a 486.
Anywho, its a mac list so maybe anyone interested could do worse than go through the description of files list here........

http://www.ualberta.ca/FTP/mac/system-software/QuickTime%202.1/QuickTime%202.1/ contains QT2.1 if its needed.
The links may not help Katzy who maybe lacking cpu power (you should find something for AIFF though) but should provide something for Catherine if the Performer is still in use, maybe even that *other* machine. ;) Quality = cpu
There is at least 1 other mp3 player for 040 macs which I haven't tried and has become hard to find so its not mentioned. :( apart from pushing the OT limit.
Now a amiga 500 is a completely different story at the same speed and in colour using the same cpu. Ok the display is not half as good without loosing other ports or......
