Others have answered your question about MP3, and I don't have anything I can add to that. But I can answer this for you!
A MOD file is a music format. It was very popular on the Amiga, but there are players for Mac too. It consists of small sound samples that are played back using a sequencer. The result is a sort of hybrid between MIDI and recorded sound, and so file sizes are bigger than MIDI, but much smaller than MP3. Some MODs can sound awesome, but like MIDI, some can sound really amateurish. They also work best for repetitive, pulsing sound like techno music. They are no use for sound containing non-repeating sounds or vocals. I used to have a nice MOD player on my old IIsi that should run on the SE/30, if it's still around anywhere. A search of the usual suspects (version tracker, etc) for "mod player" should turn up something.
