I'm planning to do the same thing with mine. I expect the proper enabler 
file (403 for the 550) would be required if you still use System 7.1. Let 
me know how it works out.

I also plan to put an Apple IIe card in mine and a bigger hard drive. 
Seems odd to me that the various FAQs ignore the hard drive issue; I've 
been told swapping it is not easy but have not found any "how to swap the 
hard drive" instructions for a Color Classic.
