The whole reason for Norton and some newer version of Apple's disk first aid will mount a disk the Finder can't access. If that fails then you do have problems. Secondly, I may have misunderstood what you were saying about the floppy disk. If you have a 1.44MB disk drive attached to your G4 and the Norton CD says you can make a floppy ... you CAN make a floppy. Most likely it is a 1.4MB disk image which and using Apple's Disk Copy should neatly transfer to a 1.44MB disk. If you are looking at the application on the CD, DON'T -- there should be a folder with disk images on it, just like on the Apple System install CDs. Often a problem will develop with a HD overnight that the Finder can't cope with, but Norton or Disk First aid can easily mount and fix, restoring things back to normal.
FYI, for clarification of my earlier post: no version of Apple Talk running under any pre-OSX System (or even OSX.1? I think) works with OSX.4.
