I have to disagree. I have a Quadra 950, running OS 8.1 which will talk with a G3 B&W running OS 10.3.*. However, I agree, OS 7.6.1 (the nearest previous generation in my possession) will not work.

Before I upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3 I was talking with machines running OS 6.0.8! In fact I've really been thinking of going back to 10.2 just so I can do that :-)

I'm sure that Apple have their reasons for what they are doing but it seems a shame to lose the ability to AppleTalk across the generations. I won't be paying for Tiger.
