With less than 512MB and XP-SP3 what you have is exactly what I would
expect (slow being an insufficient description)!!!
As for your operating system not found problems. Well, what I would do
is open it up and re-seat all boards and connectors. I have seen a
number of laptops start to have this same type of problems (all older
ones which have had quite a bit of portable usage) which were cleared
up (at least for a while if they were still being heavily used
portables from place to place).
