Ceresia, Yes even 256MB does run SP3 (I have even run it with 128MB and it took 35 minutes just to boot up and I could literally go for a coffee break while IE 8 was initializing), but, from personal experience on a dozen or so machines, it is almost useless when it can take upwards of 2-3 minutes to just get IE 8 to start up, initialize and get to the home page. And don't even think of running Firefox as your browser with less than 512MB since it is worse of a memory hog than IE 8. (At least for me wih all the extensions I have for development and support work - I have seen it take upwards of 1.5 - 2 GB just for it and consequently the OS is literally spending all of it's time swapping virtual memory if you have more than 1 application running at a time).
I would tend to go with the hard drive failure thought also. But, have you run any hard disk diagnostics on it? All the major manufacturers have drive diagnostics which will read the SMART status to give you a clue as to whether or not it is.
