Sometimes in the device manager there's more that one item related to
sound devices that could be uninstalled, i usually uninstall any that
has an active 'uninstall' option, then re scan for hardware changes
then restart, about the codec thing, i think if it was a codec problem
you'd still hear the os sounds, like error pop up, double clicking a
folder, even start up and shut down right?
