This sounds much like a machine I worked on that would do something
almost the same (though usually only 1 or 2 times per week and only
after it had been rebooted). The only way to get the sounds right was
to
disable the device, and then re-enable it. You could try that.
After that I am out of ideas (Ceresia - you monitoring? What are
your thoughts)
I do know that there is a driver update for the Soundmax driver
for HP/Compaq machines (driver version 5.12.1.3620) (you could
go to the HP site to get or to 
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/soundmax-audio.html)
If you have some other maker, did you check their website for the
latest
driver? Note that since Analog Devices never wrote reference drivers
for the
SoundMax device you must use the motherboard manufacturers driver.
Also is yours the Soundmax Digital Audio, or the Soundmax Digital HD
Audio?
