It would depend on the monitor that you are using as an external
display.

If the monitor you are using has either a DVI, DSUB(vga) or HDMI
connector then you are golden, if NOT, then you need a special device
that tones down the refresh rate or you get a TV with 640x480 that
looks terrible.

Generally a VGA to component connection would be for a Plasma TV and
say a satellite receiver connection.  I use my mac with my LCD TV and
I have a mini-usb to DVI connector, and use a DVI to HDMI cable to
hook to the TV.
My desktop computer I use a DVI to VGA adapter and connect it to my
TV, or I can use the HDMI from my mac with this setup as well.
