One application locking up another application is an operating system
issue. This would not happen under OS X.
Have you cleared out all of FF's cache files? This is often a cause of
slow startups. Next thing to delete are the preferences.
It's been slow since I first installed it (and had no cache). What do you
mean by deleting preferences? If it's under tools/options, you can't
simply delete them all. You have to choose something or another, right?
