<My Olympus C-2100 is not on the compatibility list so as far as I am
concerned, Vista
don't work.>

The current version of the software for your 7-year old camera is
Vista-compatible, and
free. I guess you didn't bother to check the Olympus site?

<This magazine found that your method "just hook the camera to the computer and
grab the
files off the camera drive" doesn't work with some unspecified number of
cameras they
tested with Vista.>

The magazine said nothing of the kind. There was not a single word about their
"testing"
any cameras at all, and it provided no shred of evidence to justify the use of
the word
"many". It mentioned TWO older models of ONE camera brand (which I'd wager that
very few
list members have ever heard of, by the way), and it didn't say that they'd
"tested" even
those.

<A different review posted to this list stated that one particular camera did
work with
Vista when the pix were transferred using a card reader.>

What frightful horseradish. First, it was the SAME review. The one you posted.
And it
wasn't "one particular camera", either. What he said was, "you can always
transfer your
pictures using a CompactFlash reader, which I guess most people do anyway."

It's interesting to note that:

  - a statement that is critical of Vista gets inflated: the reference
to two specific models becomes "many".

  - a statement that is not critical of Vista gets deflated: the phrase
"you can always transfer your pictures using a CompactFlash reader"
somehow gets translated by you to mean "one particular camera".

Interesting, and most illuminating.

<The magazine reported that Microsoft chose to make Vista not work with cameras
as they
are and expects camera manufacturers to retrofit their firmware to work with
Vista>

Please quote the sentence where he says anything remotely like "Microsoft chose
to not
make Vista work with cameras as they are". It's a demonstrably false statement,
and it's
not in there anyway.

Regarding "foisting", I'm sure you meant, but accidentally forgot, to note that
he's
referring to the "Certified for Vista" logo and not to Vista itself.

Look, the simple fact is that Vista DOES work with most cameras, and with the
vast
majority of modern ones (produced within the last several years). It works fine
with all
six of the cameras in my household, including one that I bought in 1998. Not
one needed a
software or firmware upgrade.

Your comments on Windows would be far more convincing if they weren't so
intellectually
dishonest.
