Thanks Fred, but if, in order to make this work,  I was going to have to 
install a fresh version of XP on the "dummy" drive, so to speak, I would just 
reinstall it on my current drive once I add that drive to the new system, and 
be done with it. 

The whole point of my query is to NOT have to install/reinstall XP at all, but 
to use the perfectly well-tweaked and up-to-date version I already have.
