Run as in cost. You said it up converts...but if nothing is HD what is
there to up convert? Up converting dvd players take dvds and push them to
480p AFAIK. But if your source is standard 480i, then it's never going to
be better then that. Do standard directv boxes do 480p?
The DirecTV boxes are HD [not standard], and are connected to HDTVs at
1080p resolution via HDMI. TV is connected to DVD recorder via HDMI
[out], but DTV tuner to DVD recorder is component [RGB] [plus toslink]
at 720p which is upconverted to 1080i when sent to the TVs.
Confusing? Yes, should be easier.
Cost: our DVD recorder ranges in cost from $90-160 depending on vendor.
HD/Blueray costs a lot more. 15 DVD-RW disks were $15 on sale, down from
~$40 last year--closer to $20 for quality disks this year. DirecTV and
all pay TV costs too much, but with satellite and FIOS it's not too hard
to negotiate a better deal than advertised in print or online. DTV has a
$20/mo discount online; Dish has Cinemax for $1/mo; more if you search.
