Also make sure your card will work outside the US.

We traveled to Canada a few years ago and a few of our cards would not work there. Turns out we had to let the issuer know we would be traveling outside the US so that they would turn that function on.

Also if you rent cars in Europe, you can get a discount at gas stations by showing some airlines' membership cards. I think Iberia is one, maybe Lufthansa partners too?
