More info: I was able to find the Stop Error which is:
Stop: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0xBAAD8756, 0xBACC3430, 0xBACC312c)
I did some of the MS SP3 installation tips without success (disabling
antivirus and anti-spyware programs). According to the MS website, SP3
should work on this computer.

FYI, I went ahead and downloaded/installed the Windows XP Service Pack
3 (KB936929) update, which installed OK, but upon the mandatory
reboot, the computer came up with the BSOD momentarily and then to the
options screen. When I repeatedly tried to start normally, it failed
each time as well as when I chose Last Good Configuration. I ended up
having to boot into safe-mode and then do a system restore back to
before the SP3 install. The BSOD only flashes on for 1/30 of a second
so I can't see what it is.
Any ideas? The Compaq Presario Win XP Media Center has all critical
updates installed up until SP3.
