Was AVG able to successfully complete the scan, and if so, what were the
results?
Did the computer run slow with AVG just running or did the computer run
slow while AVG was scanning? AVG shouldn't affect computer speed
adversely with just the program running. While AVG is scanning, the
amount of processing power consumed can be adjusted to suit your needs
by setting Scan Process Priority.
Avast is free and has been recommended by the list, so you might want to
give that a try.

When you say that "AVG was no less a mess", does that mean it was
unable to scan the computer either, or are you talking about
something else? I don't know much about Norton and its errors, but if
you're unable to run virus scans with either Norton or AVG, my first
thought is that it's a virus already in the computer preventing it.
Did you try Avast, or perhaps any other online scans?

AVG made it run very slow, even for a PIII-933.
As for online virus scans, Kapersky wanted me to buy the program, just
to see the results. I am running Bit Defender but, I don't have much
hope that, it won't say the same thing about, having to buy the
program, to see the results.
