With Avast you can do a boot level scan which can catch most any stuff.

Did the computer run slow with AVG just running or did the computer run slow while AVG was scanning? AVG shouldn't affect computer speed adversely with just the program running. While AVG is scanning, the amount of processing power consumed can be adjusted to suit your needs by setting Scan Process Priority.

Avast is free and has been recommended by the list, so you might want to give that a try.
