We use the Verizon prepay. Same deal as far as paying $100 and and the minutes don't expire for a year. Good service and good coverage, important since I'm out in the boonies most of the time. It's our only long distance service so it took 6 or 7 months to go through those minutes. The most painful part is that the 1st call each day we use it has a $2 access charge.
Unless Verizon is the only carrier with reception in your area, there are better choices. Verizon has one of the most expensive prepaid services, but close to AT&T's GoPhone. For some it's significantly more expensive than a monthly plan.
One way to get around the $2 access charge is to get a prepaid service that uses the Verizon network. Otherwise get a service that uses the AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint networks. You'll have to search for more details. Try cellguru.com, http://cellphones.about.com/od/serviceplananalysis/a/prepaidwireless.htm, and others.
