We picked up a Verizon 700 minute calling card for $20 at Costco.
It's less than 3 cents a minute with no monthly or connection fee
from land lines, no expiration. You have to read the fine print
when you buy a card though.

10-4 that! You may find that in-state calls cost you twice as many
"units" (minutes) as inter-state calls. That's what we have learned
on our AT&T cards purchased from Sam's Club.

BJ's also has a 700 minute Verizon card, but it has different rates for in-state, like the AT&T card. There are thousands of convenience stores, international stores, tobacco shops that sell phone cards, each with different charges. Some cards have cheaper local access numbers and no maintenance fee, but most are toll-free access with per call, weekly or monthly fees. The Jupiter card looks good, but I haven't tried it. The Costco card is the only one I've found that has no fees or intrastate restrictions from land lines, but it has a 15% recharge surcharge, so just buy a new one and toss the old one.
